Sample question, level 2 of 5
vous … (aller, to go): which is the perfect tense?
sommes allé(e)s
êtes allé(e)(s)
es allé(e)
suis allé(e)
est allé(e)
Show the answer and method
Answer: B, êtes allé(e)(s)
The method: With ‘vous’ (you (more than one)), the perfect tense of ‘aller’ is ‘êtes allé(e)(s)’. Aller takes être in the perfect tense, so the past participle agrees.
Why the other options are wrong:
A, sommes allé(e)s: ‘sommes allé(e)s’ goes with ‘nous’, not ‘vous’.
C, es allé(e): ‘es allé(e)’ goes with ‘tu’, not ‘vous’.
D, suis allé(e): ‘suis allé(e)’ goes with ‘je (j’)’, not ‘vous’.
E, est allé(e): ‘est allé(e)’ goes with ‘il / elle’, not ‘vous’.
Sample question, level 4 of 5
je (j’) … (sortir, to go out): which is the perfect tense?
sont sorti(e)s
es sorti(e)
suis sorti(e)
êtes sorti(e)(s)
sors
Show the answer and method
Answer: C, suis sorti(e)
The method: With ‘je (j’)’ (I), the perfect tense of ‘sortir’ is ‘suis sorti(e)’. Sortir takes être in the perfect tense.
Why the other options are wrong:
A, sont sorti(e)s: ‘sont sorti(e)s’ goes with ‘ils / elles’, not ‘je (j’)’.
B, es sorti(e): ‘es sorti(e)’ goes with ‘tu’, not ‘je (j’)’.
D, êtes sorti(e)(s): ‘êtes sorti(e)(s)’ goes with ‘vous’, not ‘je (j’)’.
E, sors: ‘sors’ is the present tense, not the perfect tense.
